whoa what an amazing decade for music!
this was hard but here are my top ten records of the 2000’s or whatever you call it:
(in no particular order)
1. lcd soundsystem, lcd soundsystem: this is a brilliant album that mixes brian eno/syd barrett/with gang of four and post punk dance music. i still listen to this record all the time. to me the next albums weren’t as good but still rocked. my favorite tracks: “on repeat”, “beat connection”
2. miss kittin and the hacker- first album: when i first heard miss k speak over a killer electronic future forward but retro 808 sounding beat -“to be famous is so nice, suck my d—; lick my a–“- i was like “who the hell is this??” total groundbreaking music that changed the game during the electro heyday.
3. princess superstar-princess superstar is: well, i had to add this not because it was the greatest record of the decade BUT because this was the album that allowed me to quit my day job and be a musician full time. “bad babysitter” put me on the top of the charts in the UK and suddenly i went from having no money and an office job to people asking me for autographs and a chunk of change. one never forgets that kind of blessing!
4. nicki minaj: I am not gonna put her album because actually it’s a bit too pop or sugary sweet for me, but all of her collabs on other people’s records (especially ludacris- who almost made my top ten-“my chick bad”) plus her debut track “little piggy” are all sick. i love her crazy flow and unique style. it was about time we had a new female mc kill it!
5. beck- modern guilt: i loved this psychedelic trippy record. really beautiful. fave tracks: “chemtrails” and “volcano”
6. outkast- speakerboxx/the love below: like whoa. this really changed the hip hop game when it came out. suddenly it was cool for black guys to wear pink and retro 40’s wear, and be sort of weird and mix up their genres. undoubtedly one of the best albums ever. fave track “happy valentine’s day” and the most hilarious love song “prototype”
7. tomboy-serios: probably nobody will know this record but i highly recommend picking up anything this guy does. he also plays drums in the band “who made who” and is known as tomas barford. he is a musical genius
8. vitalic-poney ep: this came out in 2001 on gigolo records and blew us all away. it was dance music that rocked harder than anything we ever heard before. including the songs “la rock 01” which alexander technique and i mashed up with “pop your pussy” -and which became our biggest dancefloor smash; and “you prefer cocaine.” this unassuming frenchman continues to make annihilating dance music- to me nobody comes close in dance music production.
9. herve- not really picking an album per se (don’t know if he actually has one?) but for a while his remixes pretty much made up 1/2 of my dj sets. crazy, unpredictable, FUN transitions- almost like 3 songs in one. and of course he is responsible for my big hit “licky” and that incredible rave breakdown. another one who changed the game in dance music. also props for setting up an awesome label “cheap thrills” which features tons of great tracks and reworked bootlegs
10. dr. dre- 2001: “you can’t make a ho a housewife” and “xxplosive”- ’nuff said.
honorable mentions: m.i.a; 2 many djs aka soulwax (incredible mash up pioneers; amazing remixers); missy elliot; justice; peaches; mstrkft; blackstrobe (all their remixes are MAJOR); air; and this parrot singing “let the bodies hit the floor”
please add your tops in the comment section!! and have the most abundant magical 2011!
